Welcome home to rediscover a life of learning. Lasell Village, sponsored by Lasell College, is home to an average of 225 residents in its independent living apartments. Lasell Village also provides supported living, short-term rehabilitation services and long-term skilled care, as well as in-home healthcare. This award-winning community invites residents to think of senior housing and retirement in a whole new way, by promoting an active, intellectually enriched lifestyle.

Life at Lasell Village reflects the interests and imagination of its residents. A focus on living and learning is the defining characteristic of the community, and one that makes it unique among retirement communities.

The presiding philosophy of education at Lasell Village is that learning is not a chore, a task or even a specified activity. It is, instead, a way of being—an approach to life through which residents pursue interests and engage in new experiences that enrich their lives.

Although it is one of a growing number of college-affiliated retirement communities, Lasell Village is the first to feature an individualized, and required, continuing education program for each resident. Each new resident of Lasell Village brings a unique and welcomed perspective.

History and the Connection to Lasell College

Seeking innovative ways to serve its mission and engage the community in lifelong learning, Lasell College approved plans in 1992 for this non-profit, first-in-America, educational retirement community and began the approval process with the City of Newton, Massachusetts.

Opened in 2000, Lasell Village marked many “firsts” both for the college and for senior living, with lifelong learning opportunities becoming a fundamental component of retirement. Residents agree to sustain their intellectual and physical well-being by participating in a wide range of group and individual activities, averaging nine hours a week (450 hours per year).

The commitment to a personalized program of lifelong learning—which had begun as a requirement for residents—has become an expectation and a foundation for the close educational, governance and social connections that exist between Lasell Village and Lasell College. Both college students and Village residents benefit from interacting through shared courses, class modules, research projects, internships and mentoring—as well as in the community itself, where students often serve as wait staff, lifeguards, interns and volunteers.

Lasell Village also integrates supportive care into the community, ensuring that residents can continue learning and enjoying new experiences even if aging challenges develop.
